The director was born in Sri Lanka from a Chinese father and a Sri Lankan mother. His Chinese heritage was a point of departure in this film which investigates the process by which an image is constructed in places foreign from that of the director. The condition of distance, embedded in the ethnographic image, traces the elusive qualities of his mother’s past and persona.
